Flexibility should respond to varied needs, rather than being reserved for a narrow group. For disability recruitment, ask whether the vacancy design lets people demonstrate the skills the job actually requires.

The Department for Work and Pensions’ Expert Academic Panel on Neurodiversity report, published on 2 October 2026, recommends accessible job descriptions, clearer recruitment processes, skills focused assessment and support such as assistive technology. In Great Britain, employers must consider Equality Act duties, including reasonable adjustments where required.

Audit each step before launch. Separate essential criteria from preferences. Explain the stages, format and likely timing. Offer a named route for adjustment requests and allow enough time to agree them. For tests and interviews, ask whether a time limit, written task or group exercise measures a real job requirement. Record what was requested, what was arranged and whether the candidate could complete the assessment as intended.

Avoid designing a universal process around one idea of disability. Candidates may have different needs, may not disclose, or may seek a change only after receiving instructions. Make the adjustment route visible without asking people to reveal personal details unnecessarily.

Use candidate feedback and process data together. Track adjustment requests and fulfilment, withdrawals and stage progression where collection is lawful and proportionate. Show the denominator and missing data.

Work life support can affect who applies. State location, hours, travel and flexibility accurately, and distinguish fixed requirements from preferences.

Record the purpose of each measure, who will review it and what action may follow.

Disability Jobsite and Ability Pathway can be considered as an additional specialist outreach route where the employer has a defined disability inclusion objective. Keep it within the existing ATS and selection process, then review the evidence against that objective.

Could a candidate understand the role, request support and demonstrate the essential skills without avoidable friction?
