We have an exciting role for a Head of Software Engineering/ Chapter Lead to play an integral part of this growing engineering function.

Direct Line Group has recently moved to a new Agile way of working and are looking for senior engineers to take on the role of Chapter Lead where they can practise their craft as well as mentor and support a squad of engineers with a servant leadership approach and mindset.   If this is of interest to you please make sure to give examples of any people management experience, especially within an agile organisation, that you have in your application.   

What you'll be doing;

Define the vision, strategy, tools and controls framework for software development at Direct Line Group (SDLC)

Identify, own and manage the risks related to software development across the Technology Services delivered change portfolio, in line with the DLG Risk Framework

Recruit, build and lead a large high performing team of engineers (20-30) and engineering managers (3-5)

Ensure effective allocation of engineering talent and resources to deliver strategically important projects

Drive transformational improvements in development and engineering practices, championing new ways of working and Agile adoption. Support the group wide ambition to become a lean agile organisation

Ensure the development teams are enabled and empowered to effectively and efficiently deliver high quality working software in an agile way – supported by high levels of engagement and fun

Be an active member of the TS Extended Leadership Team to support strategic decision making, drive continuous improvements, promote collaborative thinking and role-model EQ behaviours

Define the engineering career path at DLG along with supporting capability building plans, learning journeys and ongoing coaching and mentoring

Act as expert trusted technical advisor, SME and consultant to the COO and CIO leadership team on key technology decisions

Act as delegate and support for the Director in key technology and engineering decisions and strategy formation

Work with exec level stakeholders to ensure technical capabilities and strategy enable key business initiatives and act as trusted advisor and champion in the overall DLG ways of working transformation

Passionate about software engineering practices and sharing that knowledge with others though setting the example (role modelling), coaching and mentoring

Experience and ability to coach pair-programming, TDD, continuous delivery, microservice architecture, devops and measurement and control of software and operations

High EQ, demonstrating self-awareness, self-control and ability to lead and inspire others

Experience with cloud technologies, engineering and implementation patterns and architecture

Previous software engineering experience, with deep technical end to end knowledge from design through to delivery utilising agile methodologies

Having worked as a developer, you will have strong and broad technology skills, as well as be an SME in a core language such as Java

Must be an SME in Oracle Finance
