About the Role
This is an opportunity for a Senior Data Scientist to oversee our Business Intelligence & Analytics activities within our Data Science & Analytics team at Ordnance Survey - to provide data science expertise and leadership across a variety of data science projects.
In this role, you will use your skills and experience to extract new insights, information and evidence from Ordnance Survey’s internal business databases using a full range of techniques, from traditional coding and data processing, to cutting-edge machine learning algorithms and predictive analytics – all approached with an expert scientific mindset. You will also be familiar with cloud-based and distributed analytics environments such as Apache Spark and Databricks and will understand the types of business intelligence that can be gained from successful exploitation of business data, and how it can be used effectively to underpin decision making.
You will be highly customer focused, always considering the business problem in everything you do and working as closely with stakeholders as possible at every stage. You will provide expert advice in applying analysis, analytics, data-mining techniques and data modelling to optimise decisions across the business, and will provide thought-leadership, consultancy and technical expertise to both internal and external clients in data analytics and implementation.
You will also be a natural innovator – always seeking to try out new ideas, and you will regularly undertake rapid proof of concept work for new and innovative propositions involving data. We’ll be looking to our senior data scientists as a rich source of new ideas and inventions – some of which will grow to deliver new products or services for Ordnance Survey.
Finally, you will be a good communicator, with a natural aptitude for collaborating with others to deliver results. Business Intelligence is not a mature function at Ordnance Survey, and your role will include demonstrating the art of the possible, liaising with stakeholders to identify and access sources of data around the business, and working with decision makers to identify the key business questions that require answers and provide data-driven evidence to support business decisions and new proposition development.
You will be able to demonstrate evidence against these key criteria;
Degree level qualification in a quantitative discipline or significant experience in a relevant field
Prior experience in a data science role
Expert in working with data and a passion for solving problems with all kinds of data
Track record of working with customers and stakeholders to solve business problems using data

Track record in the application of machine learning and big data technologies
Positive and collaborative work ethic
Excellent ability to communicate and present complex subject matter in an accessible manner

In addition, the following are desirable (but not essential) criteria for the role:

Experience in creating dashboards or other data visualisations for business intelligence
Track record in demonstrating business value through applying data science to business problems
Expertise in working with geospatial data
