Job Description

The University of Bristol is one of the most popular and successful universities in the UK and ranked within the top 50 universities in the world in the 2020 QS World University Rankings. It is at the cutting edge of global research, with ground-breaking research that tackles some of the world’s most pressing issues in areas as diverse as climate change, human rights, population health, big data, and information security. Its education is shaped by the very latest thinking and is coupled with bold initiatives to empower students to fulfil their academic and personal potential. The University is home to 18,000 undergraduate students, over 5,000 postgraduate students and almost 7,000 staff, with a total income of £608 million, and it is on a significant growth trajectory to increase these over the course of the next five years.

The University is currently delivering an ambitious strategy which includes a significant programme of investment and development. The strategy focuses on improving the student experience, further enhancing its research performance, expanding the University’s footprint, and developing its international profile and impact. The University is also currently developing a new seven-acre campus in the heart of the city beside Brunel's iconic Bristol Temple Meads station, the Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.

It is in this exciting context that the University is looking to appoint two independent Lay Trustees to join its Board. The Board of Trustees is the ultimate governing body of the University. Members of the Board are charity trustees, and their principal responsibilities are to hold the Executive to account for its leadership and management of the University.

We are looking for individuals who have demonstrable senior executive and/or non-executive experience, in particular we encourage applications from those with:

Experience of the governance of large complex organisations (public and/ or private);
Knowledge or experience of research funding, specifically understanding of research policy and funding in the Higher Education sector;
Capital investment expertise, including experience of delivering large scale infrastructure projects;
Links with Bristol and/or the wider regional area, including links with local communities and local high-level connections.

Candidates must display obvious enthusiasm for the University’s work and values, and an appreciation of the University of Bristol’s mission and strategy. The University of Bristol believes that a diverse range of perspectives at board level is essential for an organisation’s legitimacy, effectiveness and competitiveness, the University therefore strongly encourages applications that will continue to strengthen the diversity of its governance.
