Role summary

Join the Independent Decision-Making Body (IDB).
Help regulate barristers in England and Wales.
Make important decisions about complaints and rules.
Work with other members in panels.

Key tasks

Prepare for and attend meetings.
Chair or be part of panels deciding cases.
Attend training twice a year in London.
Keep up to date with barristers' regulations.

Skills and experience

Barristers or former barristers who had a practising certificate in the last 3 years can apply.
Lay members must not be or have been barristers or solicitors (lawyers).
Good at reading and writing, especially for panel secretaries.
Able to take part in discussions and decisions fairly.

Pay and hours

Paid around £330 for a full working day or £165 for half a day.
Panel meetings pay more, and chairs get extra pay.
Panel secretaries can earn £750 per day.
Payment includes holiday pay and tax (VAT), if needed.

Location and workplace

You can live outside London.
Meetings can be joined remotely (online).
Training is in person in London twice a year.
Travel expenses for training will be paid.
