Job Description

Responsible for the effective management of the Technical Department in line with agreed budgetary, site and departmental objectives. Ensure that at all times, any mechanical and electrical faults are diagnosed and dealt with in a prompt and cost effective manner. Ensure that all preventative maintenance tasks are completed to minimise production downtime. Manage and develop staff promoting a culture of continuous improvement throughout the department. Undertake the management and reporting of projects as allocated by the Group Engineering


Areas of Accountability:

Ensure maximum uptime and effective operations for all equipment across the site
Manage engineering Budgets, repairs costs and expenditure
Maintain and manage the sites technical stores and stock levels
Manage, maintain and develop a strong technical team on site.
Take responsibility for recruiting and developing technical apprentices on site Key Measurable Primary Roles ● Ensure that all equipment is maintained, serviced and in good repair available for Production. All machinery should efficiently support the production process to ensure all objectives and deadlines are achieved.
Support the teams and assist in the diagnosis and correction of any faults across all electro-mechanical systems on site including facilities.
Effectively communicate to the Operations team and technical departmental any issues as and when they arise to avoid any adverse effect on agreed performance delivery and production KPI’s. Ensure teams provide clear communication and progress updates on equipment status.
Conceive, plan and implement any projects as defined by the Group Engineering Manager or senior management team.
Manage, support and motivate the engineering team within a fast-moving manufacturing environment and drive forward change management as and when required.
Assist in the setting of the annual departmental budget. Analyse statistics to track and measure site performance and expenditure.

Role Profile – Technical Manager
Constantly review the systems and operations in order to meet budgetary requirements and implement cost saving initiatives and keep pace with industry technical changes.
Identify and implement training, as required, to ensure all Technical staff are suitably equipped to carry out and develop their role.
Drive all aspects of Health & Safety - ensuring all policies and procedures are communicated, promoted and adhered to at all times throughout the production site.
Prepare, revise and submit reports and other documentation to agreed deadlines.
Maintain and optimize the technical stores ensuring efficiency and that minimum stock levels are
available to minimise equipment downtime
Undertake any ad-hoc duties, as may be necessary, for the effective and efficient daily operation of this
Provide support and guidance to staff by ensuring team meeting, 1-1 and performance reviews are
carried out to agreed DMG timelines and processes.
Actively support the integration and management of the businesses ISO certifications.
Promote a culture of continuous business improvement

Job Requirements

Electrically biased engineering qualification
Strong background in electrical and mechanical maintenance management.
An understanding of PLC controlled systems.
Familiarity in low, medium and high voltage systems.
Experience of networking, servers and remote diagnostics in an industrial controls environment.
Experience of working with Computerised Maintenance Management Systems.
Plays a mentoring role in the development of the onsite technical team.
Able to Develop, maintain, support and create a strong technical team
Self-motivated, able to work independently in a high pressure environment and provide technical
support and knowledge to the operational teams.
Strong communication, presentation skill and report writing skills


Full understanding of PLC Programming
Knowledge and experience of Newspaper printing operations
Relationship Building
Previous knowledge of 14001 and 9001 ISO certifications
Well versed in all aspects of Risk management and assessment


To be willing to develop and apply new skills outside own area of expertise
Willing to manage, work with and embrace change in working practice and personal development
Actively engages in continuous professional and personal development, both informally and through formal participation in relevant training courses/meetings and seeks to improve the service offered by the department.

Develop a robust apprenticeship program in line with the agreed learning body and the programs already in place in other areas of DMG
