Job Description

Under direction of the Duty Shift Leader, you will be supporting the day-to-day incineration of waste in accordance with regulations. You will be expected to prepare and move waste for disposal in an outside environment. 

Based at Porton Down, the Dstl Specialist Facilities Group Incinerator is responsible for destroying the hazardous waste produced by Dstl and other companies. We operate the Destructor Complex which houses our incinerator, a national asset and our main disposal facility for the disposal of explosive items, radiological and sensitive wastes. 

The incinerator runs 24/7 so we are looking for a Shift Operator to join a small team who work collaboratively to ensure the waste facility is run in an efficient, safe and sustainable manner.

Job description
• This is a high risk area with no room for error, and due to the hazardous nature of the items for disposal, you must be able to read chemical labels and distinguish colour coding.
• You will be expected to move waste from various locations, so you must be physically fit.
• Collect data and record on a Windows based computer system.
• Dstl is actively encouraging recycling or reuse where ever possible, and you will be involved in the correct disposal of waste as you gain experience in the role.
Training will be provided prior for all activities you will be undertaking.

The Shift Operator is potentially a development role and continuous professional development is encouraged and supported with a variety of learning activities and opportunities. 

The working hours are; Dayshift, 0600-1800hrs. Night shift,1800hrs - 0600hrs. 48hrs working week.

Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check.

Selection process details
This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Behaviours and Experience.

This is a 37 hours contract including a compulsory 11 hours of overtime with a total of 48 hours per week. You will also be entitled to a shift allowance of up to £4000 

Interviews will consist of a behaviour and technical interview. Please be aware that due to the current nationwide restrictions on travel and public gatherings and to ensure your safety, these interviews will likely be taking place through video interview. 

PLEASE NOTE: Due to our status as a “Reserve Post” organisation, Dstl vacancies are open to candidates who only hold UK nationality. 

If you hold Dual Nationality, i.e. have the right to abode, have citizenship or hold a passport/national identity card for another country outside the UK – you will not be eligible for this role.
